A Trip Through Robin's Bookshelf Redux

I'm not sure when I did the last one, so I can't really say it's ANNUAL, per se, but yeah. Here it is again.

The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray- Awesome books. They're like the Anti-Twilight.
The Dresden Files 1-10 by Jim Butcher- Jonas and my bonding books! Next one comes out in April. I'm counting the days. Four is the best but the ones where Murphy knows about the supernatural are very good as well.
Every Chuck Klosterman book- Chuck Klosterman IV is my favourite, with the McNuggets article standing out in particular.
The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z by Max Brooks- Probably the origin of my zombie dreams. Max Brooks is also the son of Mel Brooks, so you know it's gotta be good.
I Hated Hated Hated This Movie by Roger Ebert- A collection of Roger Ebert reviews of bad movies. Somehow, despite the title, everyone who sees it wonders why their favourite movie isn't in it.
Life Expectancy, One Door Away From Heaven, The Taking, Fear Nothing, Seize The Night, Tick Tock, Watchers, the Odd Thomas series, Your Heart Belongs to Me by Dean Koontz- I love Dean Koontz. Sadly, his books since Life Expectancy have been subpar. Step it up, Dean. I'm counting on you.
Jurassic Park, Sphere, Timeline, Prey, Next, State of Fear by Michael Crichton- R.I.P. Crichton. I miss him.
Every Dan Brown book- Okay, okay, I know everyone hates him, but I like his books. Except for Deception Point. That one wasn't very good.
The Eight by Katherine Neville- I LOVE THIS BOOK TO DEATH. She just came out with a sequel (like ten years later) and I can't wait until it goes into paperback so I can get it. What's really baffling is that this book is really good and apparently her follow up, A Calculated Risk, is really good as well. Then there's The Magic Circle, a horrendous pile of convoluted shit. It involves a magic circle (no shit) and a pile of papers that is never explained, an unnecessary parallel plotline involving Joseph of Arimathea that really has no point, and incest. Yay!
Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle- My X-Mas present from Mar. Once the comet falls, it gets really good, except there are too many characters and the relationships are really weird. Case in point: a boy scout troop meets a girl scout troops, and they all start having sex. Why? I don't know.
The Devil Wears Prada and Everything Worth Knowing by Lauren Weisberger- My favourite guilty pleasures.
The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus- Another guilty pleasure. It's okay, I guess. It's no Devil Wears Prada.
A Concise Biography of Adolf Hitler by Thomas Fuchs- This is surprisingly gripping. It's like Adolf Hitler as done by People Magazine. It basically just has a bunch of weird facts about Hitler.
The Art of War by Sun Tzu- Surprisingly, I liked this.
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini- Good book, annoying protagonist.
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden- Really, really good book, but I hate the Chairman and love Nobu.
Watership Down by Richard Adams- My favourite children's book ever!
Cash by Johnny Cash- One of my favourite biographies. Really interesting and sad.
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson- If you're getting this book, keep in mind that it's a novella and then a few short stories. I finished reading I Am Legend (spoiler: the main character dies) and then I was confused because there was half a book left. It started talking about these people at the fair adn I was so confused until I realized it was a short story. Also, there's a story about this guy who runs a midway booth and this one guy keeps winning and they run out of prizes and then he plays for these knives that are hanging around and the crowd gets all mad because the first guy wants him to stop playing and then the last line is like, "he felt like he was dying inside." I didn't know what was going on, so I asked my brother and he's like, "The knives stabbed him in the stomach." I was like, "Oh." Richard Matheson isn't always clear in his stories.
The X-Files: I Want to Believe- A novelization of the second X-Files movie. Haven't read it yet.
Dead Before Dark by Charlaine Harris- This was supposed to be Jonas and my new book series, but sadly, it is not. It's pretty good though. Strangely, Twilight seems to steal a few plot elements from this book. And Smeyer says she's never read a vampire book. Bullshit.
Icanhascheezburger- A compilation of lolcats.
The Bathroom Reader Plunges Into Music
The Knights of Liofwende trilogy by Garry Kilworth
- Delightful and zany children's fantasy books.
Princess by Jean Sassoon- A biography of a Saudi Arabian princess.
Fangland by John Marks- Unique and confusing vampire book. I'm still not sure what I think of it yet.
Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella- Minus the Shopaholic series, I love Sophie Kinsella. Her books are such good chick lit.
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine- I loved this book as a child. And then I saw the movie. I have tried at least three times to watch it, but I physically can't. I have to leave the room. The movie is horrifying. They changed virtually everything, made the elves morons, added SEVENTIES MUSIC IN A MEDIEVAL WORLD WTF. Horrible, horrible, movie. But great book. I got it when I was 10 or 11 and I still read it occasionally.
Girlfriend in a Coma, The Gum Thief, Miss Wyoming, and All Families Are Psychotic by Douglas Coupland- Girlfriend in a Coma is one of the most original books I have ever read. I loved it so much. The Gum Thief is funny and random, vintage Coupland. Miss Wyoming is...confusing. I just started All Families Are Psychotic but it looks good. I like Coupland because he's kind of off the wall and his books don't always have a cohesive plot, but somehow that's a good thing. The Jpod TV series was pretty good and was fantastic at capturing the Coupland feel. Too bad it's cancelled.
Win, Lose, or Die- A short story compilation with the theme of gambling.
An Idiot's Guide to Palmistry- I want to read palms, but I haven't read the book yet.
Bat Boy Lives- A compilation of articles from Weekly World News. That newspaper is HILARIOUS.
A Hard Day's Write- The story behind every Beatles Song.

On to DVDs:
The X-Files seasons 1-9 - I love this show so much. Funny, thrilling, convoluted, everything a good sci-fi show should be. I don't think it jumped the shark until season 9. Even when Mulder left, he was replaced by Doggett who is AWESOME. I even like Monica.
The Lone Gunmen- Short lived X-Files spinoff featuring the best secondary characters ever created on The X-Files.
Stargate SG-1 seasons 1-6- Probably the best done sci-fi series ever.
Stargate Atlantis season 1-4- Tied with Stargate SG-1 as the best done sci-fi series ever.
Eureka season 1- An obscure little show on the Sci-Fi channel. Quirky, funny, good characterization and amazing casting in Colin Ferguson as Sheriff Carter, the protagonist.
Firefly- Joss Whedon's best work. Too bad it was cancelled before it actually completed its season. There is some great casting in here, most notably Nathan Fillion as Mal and Summer Glau as River.
Buffy season 1- Vintage Whedon.
Angel seasons 1-2- I can't deny that the only reason I bought Angel was because I love David Boreanaz.
Supernatural season 1-3- My favourite show currently airing.
The Dresden Files- Not as good as the books, but still decent.
Reaper season 1- I love this show so much. It gives me the warm fuzzies. Tyler Labine, who plays Sock, was on the X-Files twice in season 3 as a stoner. He should have gotten a spinoff.

The Back to the Future trilogy- These movies were a big part of my childhood. I actually stole the trilogy from dad.
The Princess Bride- My sister loved this when she was little. Cary Elwes later showed up on The X-Files, so that was exciting.
Star Wars Episode III- I don't care what people say about the Star Wars prequel, I liked the third installment.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Donald Sutherland incarnation)-I liked the original better, but this one is still good. Mostly because it has Leonard Nimoy in it, and I kept hoping he would break out with "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins."
The Forgotten- Really good sci fi film. I love Julianne Moore's hair.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose- Despite what my sister will tell you, this is not a really scary film. Part horror, part courtroom drama, it's like Law and Order meets The X-Files. That sounds like a good combination to me.
Dawn of the Dead- My favourite Romero film.
Shaun of the Dead- Fantastic rom-zom-com with typical British humour.
Maximum Overdrive- What can I say about Max Overdrive? It's an amazing bad film. The kid on the bike was awesome though, as was the AC/DC soundtrack.
The Omen- One of Mar's favourite films. I have a soft spot for Gregory Peck.
Predator- Watching this with the Regional people was a great experience. "GET TO DA CHOPPAH" and of course Arnie's weird model poses.
Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum- Yay for Stargate movies!
Pan's Labyrinth- Visually stunning, well acted, and gripping. I love this film.
Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon- I love Bogie.
The Thin Man- The only movie I've ever seen in which the lack of plot doesn't matter. Myrna Loy and William Powell have great chemistry. An excellent adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel.
12 Angry Men- Who knew that a movie set almost entirely in a small room could be good? Henry Fonda was great in this one.
Roman Holiday- Widely held as the most enjoyable movie ever. Another Gregory Peck movie and an Oscar winning role for Audrey Hepburn.
Breakfast at Tiffany's- I just love George Peppard in this one and the end where they kiss in the rain with Cat squished between them is great.
10 Things I Hate About You- My favourite teenage movie ever. I have seen it like eight times but I still love it.
Hellboy- Probably my favourite comic book adaptation. Hellboy is kind of like a subversion of the original comic book heroes.
The X-Files: Fight the Future- Okay, I know the movie is actually pretty terrible. I've seen it twice and I still don't know what's going on. But I love it because it's The X-Files.
The 6th Sense- M. Night Shyamalan at his best. Too bad he's gone downhill since Signs.
Minority Report- Tom Cruise before he went nuts. Was my favourite movie for awhile.
War of the Worlds- Pretty good modernization of the HG Wells novel.
The Truman Show- The only Jim Carrey movie I actually like.
Silence of the Lambs- Really scary and I love it.
The Ninja Turtles trilogy- Horrible movies but great to mock.
Body Rock- Another horrible movie that is great to mock. What can I say about Body Rock? Watching it is practically a religious experience.
Vampires: Los Muertos- I only bought this because Jon Bon Jovi is in it.
Something Corporate concert DVD
Cream documentary
Hendrix
