The Host Chapter 28

You know how the cover of The Host has a ginormous eye on it? It's looking at me right now, but it's huge because it's a PDF and it's like staring into the abyss. SAVE ME JEEBUS.

Chapter 28- Unenlightened

Weird words:
Balk (as a noun)
Somnolent AGAIN.

Let's be honest here: was Wanderer EVER enlightened?

So sometime, Jamie came back and Wanderer is for some reason STILL sleeping in the storage area, despite the fact that Pedobear knows where she is.

It's unclear how old Jamie is. She kept talking about him being a "man" and to me that's like, fifteen at the youngest. And yet he's still saying things like "Jared's going to stop picking on you. He promised." Does that not sound like a ten year old? I wish Smeyer would make these things clear.

Anyway, Jamie convinces Wanderer to go back to the others and Melanie isn't objective because she wants to see her beloved Pedobear, who has turned out to be a huge douchebag.

Something's going on. Lucina won't look at Wanderer and Jamie is using forced enthusiasm. Maybe she really is going to die. I hope so. But then Jamie wouldn't have asked her to come back. Dammit.

“This food isn't meant for me. Jared and the others weren't risking their lives so that I could have eggs for breakfast. Bread is fine.” Eat the gorram eggs, Wanderer. I really don't want to be defending you, but Pedobear's an idiot AND he hit you AND he broke Jamie's nose. Eat the eggs and stick it to the man.

I ate more slowly, hoping that I'd be able to convince him to eat some of mine when he was
done. ARKHGSADF;LSADFJHSDLKFHASDKJFLHDS STOP BEING SO SELF SACRIFICING!

Wanderer notices that everyone is sad. But why? Usually Smeyer's secrecy is really transparent, like the Edward/Bella/Jacob love triangle where you totally knew she was never going to pick Jacob. But I don't have ANY ideas. Maybe the Seeker killed someone.

I was not surprised to see that he was just as down as everyone else. Does anyone even USE the word "down" as a synonym for sad anymore? The last time I remember reading that was in an Archie comic, circa 1957.

Jeb. WHERE'S JEB? He is one of two people in this whole story that I can tolerate, Jamie being the other one. If he dies I will be so disappointed, especially if Smeyer had to kill anyone off for the first time, WHY COULDN'T IT HAVE BEEN PEDOBEAR? Okay, I don't know. There was some overheard conversation between Pedobear and Kyle that made no sense. Now Ian notices that Wanderer's face is all jacked up and he's all outraged and shit and hmm I WONDER WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN BETWEEN IAN AND WANDERER?

He grinned again. “I feel silly standing here with my arms empty while you lug these around.
Chalk it up to gallantry. Everyone in Smeyer's universe talks like they're from the fifties, I swear to God.

Anyway, now Ian and Wanderer are in some out of the way place (OOOOH) and Ian asks if Melanie is still inside and then they get in this big conversation about it.

I appraised his fierce expression–the fire in his brilliant eyes. It is SO Harlequin.

For some reason Doc has gone and gotten drunk. This has been mentioned a few times now, but I don't know if it's significant or if it's some sad attempt at comedy.

“Sure.” A one-word lie wasn't quite so obvious. Or maybe I was just being sarcastic again. You don't fucking KNOW how to be sarcastic.

“Where did you sleep last night?” he asked, his eyes surprisingly sharp under his half-closed
lids.
“Why?”
“I can sleep there now, and you can be inconspicuous beside me.”
We were just murmuring, barely over a whisper now. No one paid us any attention.
“You can't watch me every second.”
“Wanna bet?”
That's not creepy at all.

So now Ian and Wanderer are walking around and it appears that Pedobear is like, lying in wait or some such.

“Come out, come out, wherever you are,” he [Pedobear] called, his voice hard
and mocking.

Okay, I have to admit, I don't hate Ian. I even find him kind of sweet. So for the love of God, why is Wanderer still so hung up on Pedobear who is intolerant, kind of an asshole jerkass, mean, and scary, when Ian obviously likes her and is trying to protect her and cares about her? WHY DOES EVERY RELATIONSHIP HAVE TO BE ABUSIVE?
