The Host Chapters 39 and 40

Here's a troubling paragraph from chapter 38:

“I–I can't think.” When I moved my mouth to speak, he moved his with it.
“That sounds… good.”
His mouth pressed down with more force now. He caught my lower lip between his and pulled
on it gently.

I guess I was so amazed by the PG-13 fare that I didn't even notice that when she was like, "I can't think" that he was like, "That sounds good." He doesn't want her to think? He didn't STRIKE me as a misogynist, but I guess Smeyer can't go TOO long without creating a blatantly sexist man. Also, I'm running of synonyms for "woman hater." I'm going to pull a Smeyer and check the thesaurus: All I got is male chauvanist (except she's not male, so that's a bust), anti-feminist (which I've used a few times), sexist, and misogynist. Also misanthrope, but that's not really the word I'm looking for. THESAURUS.COM, WHY MUST YOU FAIL ME IN THIS WAY?

Chapter 39- Worried

So now Ian is pulling a Tyler, and only a few people will know what that means.

“Oh, come on.” He put his hand on my knee. Mel's angry reaction was lethargic. She was too
used to this kind of thing to really work up a good fit anymore. “They'll be back today. Before
sunset, without a doubt.”
“You said that three days ago, and two days ago, and again yesterday,” I reminded him.
“I have a good feeling about today. Don't sulk–it's so human,” he teased. Does it seem like he completely changed personalities? Let's keep a tally of all who have changed personalities:

Melanie used to be (supposedly) strong and self sufficient and feisty. She now doesn't care about anything.
Pedobear- Used to be nice, if a bit over-garrulous and a little stalkerish. Now is a whiny, intolerant douchebag.
Ian- Used to be kind, sweet, considerate, intelligent. Now he kind of freaks me out. He seems a little manic and over-happy.

Wanderer is all sad because Jamie is going on a raid. Again, I have no idea how old he is. The way Melanie talks about him sometimes, it's seems like he's like fifteen. But the way he talks makes it seem like he's 10. And he's going on a raid?

Anyhoo, Ian needs her help with a project and he's grinning like a crazed clown. He is so manic, I don't even know. Now with the devolution of Ian and Jamie is getting a little annoying and Jeb is never around anymore, there are officially no characters that I care for. Good going, Smeyer.

The project is a soccer game, btw. What is with the random sports? First baseball and now soccer.

I sighed. “Fine.Fine. Be that way.”
Ian hugged me with what Melanie thought was unnecessary enthusiasm. “You're my very
favorite person in the known universe.”

And AGAIN, he changed personalities! Did Ian and Jamie switch bodies or something? I DON'T GET IT.

Bunch of stupid stuff about the soccer game, no one cares.

Lily called the game when we hit twenty-one. I'm so sure you got 21 goals. This is soccer, not basketball.

“Don't be a sore loser,” Lily said, reaching out to tickle Wes's stomach playfully. Argh, this brings to mind my constant nightmares of being poked in the stomach. I feel cringy just thinking about it.

Ian and I exchanged a quick, startled glance. Why are you startled? Aren't they sleeping together? Nvm, my bad. They aren't. Anyway, then Wanderer challenges Ian to a game saying that if he wins he can sleep in her room. This is another personality change. It seems like more sophisticated flirting than she's capable of. So he wins, duh.

“Tired?” he asked, the innocence in his tone a bit overdone. Being funny. He stretched. “I think
I'm ready for bed myself.” He leered in a melodramatic way. This honestly doesn't sound like him AT ALL. I think he got bodysnatched. Also, PG-13! PG-13!

I don't know how much time has passed, but Wanderer and Ian are all flirty and stuff when wasn't it just a chapter ago that Ian was mad because she liked Pedobear more and she wasn't sure if she liked Ian touching her? I don't understand.

“Everyone's back and well,” Trudy assured me. Of course they are. If anyone in a Smeyer book ever got severely injured or died than I would die of shock.

I wanted to offer my help–anything that would get me to where Jared was so I could see with
my own eyes that he was safe–but I knew I wouldn't be allowed to see where the goods were
coming in. Get over him already. Pedobear's an asshole.

He sighed. “I tripped with a knife in my hand.” Ha, what an idiot. Never run with scissors, Jamie. Also, this kind of reminds of Where The Red Fern Grows where this kid (or possibly a dog) fell on a knife that was sticking out of the ground. I remember watching the movie in grade 5 and it pretty much traumatized me for the rest of the year. Of course, now I watch Supernatural for fun which is way worse. Also, while we're on the subject of WTRFG, I JUST remembered a part that was more traumatizing than the knife part. I remember one of the dogs gets attacked by a mountain lion and it describes in detail how its intestines were falling out. For a little girl who loved animals, this was awful to read. I don't think they should make ten year olds read that stuff. Reading the synopsis on Wikipedia, I remembered how racoon hunting was srs bsns in that book. It's kind of funny.

Also, I guess Ian's not sleeping with Wanderer tonight. You know what makes me sad? That Bella and Wanderer can both get boyfriends and I can't.

Ohhhh. Remember when Doc was getting sloshed and everyone was so sad? That was never really explained. Now Trudy is acting weird and Wanderer thinks the same thing happened that made everyone sad last time and she's going to find out what it was. I'm going to guess that they're experimenting on Yeerks, trying to get them out and people are dying.

Chapter 40- Horrified

I don't get what's happening. She sees a bunch of dismembered bodies, one is a baby, and they're all bloody and there's silver stuff everywhere, or something.

I was right. Doc's trying to take the souls out. Despite the fact that he's a medical doctor and he should be aware that the host's consciousness disappears, which, if the Yeerk is taken out, leaves the host as a nonthinking vegetable. Where's Dr. House when you need him?

“Yes. If you or I had walked in on a human vivisection, with torn body parts, with blood
splattered on everything, it wouldn't have been as bad for us as it was for her. Who even says vivisection? It's called an autopsy, asshole. They said vivisection in Island of Dr. Moreau, and that was written in like 1899.

She ran away and then Pedobear found her and he's trying to comfort her.

“You look like you want to be alone. That's okay. I can keep them away, if that's what you
want.” Alone means you too, asshole.

“She wants to be alone. Let her be.”
“Don't get in my way again, Howe.”
“Do you think she wants comfort from you? From a human?” Isn't that what...you were trying to do Pedobear? In case you forgot, you're human too.

If I was Ian, I would just give up on her. She's covered head to toe in issues.
