The Host Chapters 34 and 35

Chapter 34- Buried

So now Pedobear randomly did a 180 (a 360! Good times in history) and is suddenly mad at Kyle for attacking Wanderer, despite the fact that, if I didn't miss a part of this book, he wants to kill her too...SO CONFUSED. Hey, another funny part:

So Jared hits Kyle, and then...

“Um,” Doc said in a mild voice, “medically speaking, I'm not sure that was the most helpful
thing for his condition.”
“ButI feel better,” Jared answered, sullen.

It just hurts me when she's actually funny and I become pardoxical because:

a) I want to kill myself for finding her funny
b) I get happy because there's a ray of sunshine in this book.

If she puts in too many legitimately funny moments, my brain will go round and round and explode and I'll die. That's what will happen. Seriously.

“How about by yours? In my species, I am the one that bears young. Is that not female enough for you?”
That stopped him short. I felt almost smug.
As you should,Melanie approved. He's wrong, and he's being a pig about it.
Thank you.
We girls have to stick together.

Oh please. I'm not even gonna COMMENT.

"We don't have such a complicated… elaborate
setup as your species.” I laughed again, and then felt warmth in my face. I remembered only too clearly how elaborate it could be.

I just remember how Smeyer mentioned that she never explains the vampire venom semen thing because she tends to giggle when she says the word "semen." I guess that's what's happening here.

She's now explaining about Mothers. They each divide and every cell becomes a new cell, and there are about a million. And when they do this, they die. I can't help but think there's some kind of veiled LDS philosophy here. I know that they believe bearing children is very important, so important that you'd die for it maybe, so maybe that's what this is? I don't know.

Aaron and Andy had wary, disturbed expressions on their faces. If she named them Amos and Andy, that would be EPIC.

Anyway, I think there are like, one mother for every five thousand Yeerks born or something and Wanderer is one of them. So now everyone's so scared because she can burst into a m ollion souls and I WONDER IF THIS IS GOING TO BE SIGNIFICANT LATER.

I don't know what's happening. They drugged her and now she's outside for some reason and they didn't wait for her to come to Walter's funeral.

He pulled me up off the ground, and my head spun like a ship about to capsize. I groaned.

Wanderer, I read "A Night to Remember." Ships that are capsizing don't spin around.

Now Ian's carrying her everywhere. I just think that's so...ugh. I would want to walk, if I was hurt. I wouldn't let anyone carry me around. She's not even that badly hurt, anyway. Dresden went through way worse and he went on to use magic and do some epic battles. You're just picking up sand and throwing it. It's not hard.

Chapter 35- Tried

Anyway, Wanderer wakes up because they drugged her again and she's in Ian's room and Ian is going to move into Wes's room but of course Wanderer doesn't like this because she's so arghy. Ian says there's going to be a tribunal and Wanderer insists on going to try to save Kyle's life. LET HIM DIE.

“When?” I asked again.
“First light. I won't take you.”

Riddle me this. If you didn't want someone to go to an event, would you tell them when this event is? Probably not, but Smeyer's characters aren't full of logic.

Ian fucking fed her. I'm serious.

Melanie's getting mad because Ian likes Wanderer too much but he doesn't care that she's there.

“You look rotten,” she told me. And we've returned to the fifties time warp.

“Okay, then,” Jeb said in a loud voice meant to be heard by all. “Here's how it's gonna work.
Straight-up majority vote. As usual, I'll make my own decision if I have a problem with the
majority." Is he saying that if they vote against what he wants, he has veto power? Isn't that like Hitler?

And now it appears that everyone is against her again. And suddenly Pedobear protects her, but I don't know why! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, I JUST WANT TO KNOW! Why is he suddenly on her side???? So anyway, they vote that Kyle should stay with no punishment, and Jeb agrees. Pedobear and Ian are both mad at this. I'm just trying to understand when Pedobear all of a sudden decided that he liked her. Was it after the kiss? Is he trying to keep Wanderer alive just so he can have Melanie back? I'm inclined to think "no" because he would still be angry at Wanderer for taking Melanie's body. So the only conclusion I can draw from this is that he arbitrarily changed his mind for no adequately explained reason, which would make sense since this is a Smeyer book.
