I just watched Moonlight today. I thought it might be good. Shows with vampires are usually awesome. But you know what's original about Moonlight? Absolutely nothing. The vampire PI thing has been done a zillion times, most notably in Blood Ties, Angel, and a little known Canadian show called Forever Knight. I guess I shouldn't blame Moonlight...there isn't much original material available for the vampire genre. The last completely original take on it was "Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter." However, even if they weren't completely original, Blood Ties and Angel worked. The cast had chemistry, there were awesome one-liners, and great sexual tension. Mick (the vampire) and Beth (the girl he works with) are supposed to have sexual tension, but I'm not seeing it. It's not crackling (like Henry and Vicky from Blood Ties) or even under the radar (like Mulder and Scully's) it's completely NOT THERE. Another thing...vampires are widely held to be seductive and charming. Mick is neither. He's not even funny, which I think would improve the show a lot.
Beth is supposed to be a hard-hitting reporter, but she's mostly just vapid eye candy. She's pretty enough, but she's not smart or witty. It's completely possibly to be pretty, smart and witty. I can think of lots of heroines who pull that off: Scully, Veronica Mars, Vicky Nelson, Samantha Carter, and Buffy. And I am SICK of supernatural dramas in which the girl knows nothing about the supernatural, but the guy does. That could just be me though. Moonlight can't even have original music...the song they used at the beginning was the same song by The Bravery that was used in Gossip Girl just a month ago.
You know who would be great as Mick St. John? Milo Ventimiglia. Producers of Moonlight, get right on that.
