Okay, I know I was going to write that before but I was summoned to babysit (more about that later)
I am a science fiction geek, and here are my ten favorite books ever:
10. Chocky by John Wyndham. It's about a boy named Matthew who has an alien named Chocky living in his head, who is researching Earth or something like that.
9. I can't remember the name, but I read it a long time ago. It's about a computer that controls everyone except these two kids, who try to kill the computer.
8. Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. The first Wyndham book I ever read. It's about these walking, thinking plants that try to take over, after they make everyone but three people go blind. These three people: the main character, the love interest, and a ten year old girl who wields flamethrowers, try to kill all the Triffids and put their lives back to relative normal. I know, I know...cheesy science fiction. I mean, intelligent plants? But it's really good and I would recommend it to anyone.
7. Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham. It takes place in the village of Midwich, when all the women get pregnant for no reason. They deliver weird babies that all look alike and think collectively, and they are planning on taking over the world. It has a really sad ending, but the book was super good. For the longest time I thought it was about evil birds.
6. Consider Her Ways by John Wyndham. It's a short story about a woman who is testing this drug and gets her soul put into someone else's body from the future. In the future, a mysterious virus kills all the men (since they are genetically inferior, ha ha ha) and this person's soul gets put into the body of a "mother" a person whose only purpose in life is to have babies (don't ask me how, because I have no idea) and she resents it and when she tells everyone who she really is, they all think she's crazy, until she meets a historian who helps her get her body back.
5. I, Robot by Isaac Asimov. It's a collection of short stories, usually featuring a robot testing team, whose name I can't remember at the moment. It also has a couple stories featuring robopsychologist Susan Calvin. The stories are surprisingly funny, and I loved the book.
4. I can't remember the name, but its a short story I found. It's about people who start having babies that look like monkeys, and people are trying to find out why, and then they find a gorilla that delivers a peculiarly human looking baby. If you haven't figured it out yet, they point is that we are devolving and they are evolving, kind of like Planet of the Apes.
3. The Chrysalids by John Wyndham (if you haven't figured it out yet, John Wyndham is one of my favorite authors) Anyway, its about the future, after a nuclear war, where the chances of breeding true are fifty percent. Unless you are PERFECT, you are a deviation and will be terminated. Anyway, a group of kids can talk to each other using their minds, and someone finds out and they have to run away to the Fringes, where all the deviations live, and try to find a place where they will be safe.
2. One involving mushrooms which I can't remember the name of, but is by Ray Bradbury. It's about these mushrooms that are taking over Earth, and if you eat them they take over you. (kind of like Yeerks) Once again it sounds really cheesy, but it is insanely good.
AND THE NUMBER ONE BEST SCI FI BOOK EVER????
1. Sphere by Michael Crichton. Like all Michael Crichton books, Sphere start boring but has an incredible climax. A group of scientists are summoned to the bottom of the ocean to look over an alien spacecraft that was found. After looking inside, they find an alien sphere, but can't figure out how to open it. Then weird things start happening, like previously unknown species coming to light, and a killer squid that attacks the habitat where everyone is living. Norman, the main character, races against time to find out what is happening. It was insanely insanely good, and I've read it like three times. If you want a really awesome book, read this one.
SOME OTHER GOOD NON SCI FI BOOKS:
The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton. A mysterious virus wipes out an entire town, and a group of scientists race against time to figure out the cure. It was really unique in that it was boring, but I couldn't stop reading anyway.
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. I don't think I need to explain this one.
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. A man is found murdered in the Louvre, and he left behind clues to find the Holy Grail. Robert Langdon and Sophie (can't remember her last name) race against the bad guys to find the Holy Grail. It also involves a big conspiracy, and who doesn't love conspiracies?
Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. A time bomb is in the Vatican, and Robert Langdon has to find it, also while searching for four Cardinals who are being killed by the Illuminati.
Deception Point by Dan Brown. This wasn't as good, but I still liked it. A meteorite was found in the Arctic, and then people start dying, and Rachel Sexton has to race for her life to warn the president of a conspiracy.
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine I don't feel like writing this out (look under Books that Get Turned Into Movies and Why They Suck) The book was really really good.
Teen Idol by Meg Cabot. A movie star comes to town to pose as a high school student to research a role, and Jenny has to keep people from finding out who it is.
Mediator series, by Meg Cabot. Suze is a mediator: a person who helps ghosts finish unfinished business and get to the hereafter.
The White House Connection by Jack Higgins. Members of the splinter group the Sons of Erin are being killed, and Sean Dillon has to find out why. This book is unique in that other than the Sons of Erin, it didn't have an antagonist.
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Yes, it is a book as well.
Chess Master, by someone who I can't remember. It's a short story, and is about a machine that can play chess, but is a sore winner. No one knows if it is a sore loser, because it hasn't lost. One man wonders what happens when it does...
So read those!
And also for your reading pleasure, are the two stupidest books I have ever read:
1. Freeze Tag by Caroline B. Cooney. A girl for some insane reason can freeze people when she points at them. So this other girl has to stop her. The ending is so stupid. Laney (the freeze girl) gets caught in a blizzard or something, and the other girl (I think her name is Megan) goes and finds her, and the last line is "maybe she wasn't cold. Maybe she was just waiting to be brought into the warmth" or something like that. I'm like "you idiot! She's gonna freeze you AGAIN! Let her freeze to death!"
2. I Capture the Castle, by someone who I can't recall. The main reason I hated it was because of the love octagon. Here it is:
Stephen likes Cassandra, who doesn't like Stephen, but thinks he likes this other lady. Cassandra likes Simon, who doesn't like her, but likes Rose, who doesn't like him but likes Neil, who likes Rose. Then we also have Topaz, who thinks the dad likes this old lady, but he really doesn't. I was like "aarrrgghh! Let's have some resolution here!" But there never was.
Anyway, I gotta go find a book. Adios!
